The Growing Concern
Obesity is a growing concern for more than 30 percent of Americans. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that with obesity comes an increased risk for coronary heart disease, hypertension, stroke, liver disease, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, type 2 diabetes and several forms of cancer.
Another concern that comes with obesity is the cost. Nationally, obesity and its related health effects account for over $80 billion dollars of cost in our health care system. The gastric band procedure is helping many people with their decision to lose weight and take control of their life.
The gastric band procedure is making a difference for many people in our community. People like Penny and Mike.
In 2006, Penny Marriott and her husband, Mike, took a huge step in taking control of their lives and weight. The two were the first patients in Eastern Idaho to undergo the gastric banding surgery. An adjustable silicone band was placed around their stomachs to restrict the amount of food that enters, helping them to feel full, fast.
Today, their lives have totally changed. Together, Penny and Mike have lost over 200 pounds.
It’s hard for them to describe the amazing change that has taken place. Penny and Mike now go camping and hiking and have lots of energy to play with their grandkids.
Penny’s grandkids love it and exclaim, "Grandma is so much fun now!"
Dr. Anthony Davis, Bingham Memorial Hospital’s fellowship-trained bariatric and minimally-invasive surgeon, is holding a free seminar to inform and educate people about the gastric band procedure.
