New ankle replacement procedure offers relief and convenience to southeast Idaho residents
April is Foot Health Awareness Month, a time to be mindful that foot health has an overall impact on total body health, and that a podiatrist is key to ensuring optimal foot health. Walking involves much more than repetitive footwork. It requires a harmonious relationship between the brain, muscles, bones and joints. If any of these areas are damaged in a certain way, walking can become impossible.
To ensure ankle joints will never be the part of the problem, Dan Robinson, DPM, of Bingham Memorial’s Orthopedic Institute is making the Scandinavian Total Ankle Replacement (STAR) readily available to residents of southeast Idaho.
Dr. Robinson is currently the only doctor in east Idaho qualified to perform this procedure. He is certified by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery, and also in foot and ankle surgery. In November 2013, Dr. Robinsoncompleted one of the first ankle replacement procedures performed in southeast Idaho, achieving excellent results. The surgery was recommended for chronic ankle pain, and three months later the patient was virtually pain free and walking normally with a new ankle.
STAR is one of the few ankle implants that nearly replicates the ankle’s natural motion. The new ankle is made up of the same materials that have been used in hip and knee replacements for the last 30 years. “This is a great opportunity for patients suffering with ankle pain to finally have relief,” says Dr. Robinson.
Convenience At Its Finest
Previously, patients considering a total ankle replacement had to travel to Boise or Salt Lake City for the surgery, and all follow-up appointments. “Instead of traveling repeatedly for pre- and post-operation appointments to unfamiliar hospitals, patients can save travel and hotel expenses, and most importantly—time,” says Dr. Robinson. “Patients can have all the work done at Bingham Memorial Hospital. This includes all follow-up care and rehabilitation, all in a community where they feel comfortable.”
Who is STAR Right For?
STAR is ideal for those who suffer from ankle pain, traumatic arthritis, osteoarthritis or deformities of the ankle. It is not recommended for patients with diabetes suffering from neuropathy, or who have peripheral artery disease.
Following a new ankle replacement, patients should expect a decrease in pain and an increase in mobility. Physical therapy and rehab are implemented to achieve full recovery.
