Urgent Care vs Emergent Care

Feb 17, 2016Health Focus

1st Choice Urgent Care is conveniently located, economical, no appointments are required, and the wait times are short.

The benefits of visiting an urgent care center are that it’s convenient and typically costs less. Extended hours are especially welcome for those days and hours that your primary doctor office is closed. But when faced with a medical problem that requires immediate care, it is often hard to determine if it is an emergency or if it is an urgent medical issue.

When to visit the ER

In general, an emergency condition is one that can permanently impair or endanger the life of an individual. Some conditions that require emergency medicine may include:

  • Compound fractures (broken bone through the skin)
  • Deep knife or gunshot wounds
  • Fevers in newborns
  • Poisoning
  • Seizures or loss of consciousness
  • Serious head, neck or back trauma
  • Severe abdominal pains
  • Severe chest pain or difficulty breathing
  • Signs of stroke or heart attack

*Dial 911 immediately for any medical problem that appears to be life-threatening.
