What type of doctor treats foot and ankle problems?

A podiatrist is a doctor that studied podiatry. They treat common problems people are experiencing, such as foot pain, toe pain, heel pain, bunions, hammertoe, and other foot deformities. They also help diabetic patients to control foot pain and eliminate future problems, which sometimes lead to amputation.

DPMs receive medical education and training comparable to medical doctors or doctors of osteopathic medicine, including four years of undergraduate education, four years of graduate education at one of nine podiatric medical colleges, and two or three years of hospital-based post-graduate residency training.
