W. Kurt Birkenhagen, MD

Specialty: General Surgery

Bingham Memorial Hospital is pleased to introduce W. Kurt Birkenhagen, MD. For almost 34 years, Dr. Birkenhagen has been one of the most trusted and respected surgeons in the eastern Idaho area.

Dr. Birkenhagen received his undergraduate degree from Rutgers University in New Jersey, after which he completed medical school at the Temple University School of Medicine. Following a rotating internship in the United States Army as well as three years of active duty service -- including one year in Vietnam – Dr. Birkenhagen completed his surgical residency at St. Mary’s Hospital in San Francisco.

He has been a fellow of the American College of Surgeons since 1987, as well as serving as a delegate to the Southwest Surgical Society and state president of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Birkenhagen has also been a member of the European Association of Endoscopic Surgery since 2001.

For 25 years, Dr. Birkenhagen served as the District Surgeon for the Union Pacific Railroad, covering the states of Montana, Wyoming and Idaho, providing much-needed medical attention to railroad workers all across the northwest.

As a specialist in thoracic and vascular surgery, Dr. Birkenhagen enjoys solving patients’ problems and focusing on conditions like Berrett’s esophagus, a condition marked by a breakdown in the lining of the esophagus that can sometimes lead to cancer.

“I’m excited about working with a non-profit community hospital that is focused on delivering quality patient care at an affordable price,” Dr. Birkenhagen says. “Not only does Bingham Memorial have state-of-the-art equipment and a knowledgeable staff, it has the warm, down-to-earth feeling I have come to establish with my patients over the many years I have practiced in Pocatello.”

Dr. Birkenhagen enjoys golfing, traveling and riding horses in his spare time. His office is located at the Physicians and Surgeons Clinic of Pocatello, inside the Pocatello Professional Plaza at 1151 Hospital Way, Building D, Suite 200.
